Inspiration on Clothing and Style

An open letter to Otto Z. Stern

I agree that dressing thoughtfully is as important as good composition in essays and art. That is, it is a good selling point, but not an absolute requirement should other virtues shine through. When we wear a certain shirt, or dress, this is as much a conscious act of communication as when we lay a pen down on paper and let forth. However, I disagree that a tie is what makes the suit. Rather, I would suggest that it's the even stitching, the color combination, and the cleanliness of clothing we should focus on. It's possible to look shabby in pinstripes just as much as in cardigans. I strongly suggest you amend your statement to say that the only hard and fast rules are that the clothing shows sign of attention and care, and isn't neglected, dirty and threadbare. Even the threadbare clothing can be beyond the employee's control, since they are obviously looking for employment and might not be able to shop at the fine clothing stores. Some people like to emphasize other good points, communicating through words, pictures, programs, explanations, visions, and don't put a lot of effort into clothing. This does not invalidate them, since clothing is only one aspect of fashion, style, and consideration. Dirty clothing can be a danger to people's health, especially in certain lines of work, so even the santliest worker shouldn't get away with that.
