Place Your Bets

Journal started Jan 2, 2003

Maybe... maybe what I do is important. Maybe it's not all a lie, a hopeless dream. Maybe the lie is that it's not important, and I should remind myself that I don't know for sure.

I think I know why we have so many stories venerating indigenous culture. On some cultural level, we realize our culture does not lead a meaningful life, and we realize, on some level that other cultures, even primitive ones, are approximately advanced as our own in terms of... well... culture. There's a much larger chance that one of the many cultures we're losing has "figured it out," than the one lonely dominant culture we wield with such arrogance today. In all our superiority and hubris, the odds still favor the medicine man, and our authors are saying "Place your bets there."
