But the Karyn that came in wasn't the Karyn he remembered. Or rather, it was... Karyn with short red hair and smaller breasts, just as before the earlier wish. "Hi, Jon," she said. "Hi, Wendi. Look, Jon, about that trig test, I heard that..." "Karyn?" asked Jon. "I said, about that trig test..." "No, not that. You know Wendi. You can't know Wendi. And your hair and, umm..." Karyn looked puzzled, and very much not aware that the ending of that sentence was supposed to be "breasts". "I don't understand," she said. Then she looked at Wendi. "Wendi, are you okay?" "There's nothing wrong with me." "You're lying on the bed staring into the ceiling with a vacant smile on your face. Something's wrong." "Listen, Karyn," said Jon. "Could you get some drinks for all of us? I'm getting kind of thirsty." "Okay," she answered hesitantly. Then, after taking one last glance at Wendi, she left to get drinks from the kitchen. "What's going on?" asked Jon. "Karyn is here." "I mean, what's going on with her and you. You couldn't have met her. I changed you into a girl just now. And her hair and breasts are back." "That's beyond my knowledge, Jon." Jon touched Wendi's hand and said "I wish you'd tell me." "Thank you. The answer is that when you wished for me to become a girl, you changed reality so that I had always been one. This means that Karyn would remember me as one." "And the reason her hair and breasts are back?" "There's no reason to expect a girl to be able to grant wishes when touched. So in this reality, I've never granted any wishes and nobody knows I can do it. You and I only know because we heard the wish and weren't affected." "She even knows your name." "Once reality was changed so that I had always been a girl, I must have had a name, too. Since I became a girl because of your wish, my name became the one you were most likely to pick. You did in fact pick that later when you got a chance." "So Karyn and everyone else knows you as Wendi and has no idea about the wishes or the stone." "That's right." "Okay, then who are you?" Wendi was about to answer, except that at that point Karyn had opened the door. "Who is she?" said Karyn. "Did she hit her head or something and forget who she is? Wendi is...." | |
