What a nice girl, she thought. I wish my son could be little more like her. She still held the rock in her hand, but fortunately she was only thinking a wish and not actually saying it out loud.

Unfortunately, she did say the next thing out loud: "That Karyn is a sweet girl, but she is such a tomboy," she said. "Why couldn't she be more like those other girls at school? Like that cheerleader...Sarah something." She had met Sarah once. She'd seemed so polite. Jon's mother didn't know what a horror Sarah could be. "I just wish Karyn had more in common with that Sarah girl."
