"Oh, before Sarah gets back," Karyn interrupted, "I kind of, uh, told her about the wishing rock."

"W-what?" Jon stuttered. "When?"

"In school today. When else?"

Jon shook his head. Of course -- in this changed reality where Karyn and Sarah were apparently good friends, it made sense that Karyn might let something slip. He asked, "So why didn't she mention it to me on the drive over here?"

"I told her not to tell you she knew until I talked to you," admitted Karyn.

Jon took a second to parse that sentence and then said only, "Okay."

"Are you mad?"

"No, why would I be mad? Just as long as Sarah doesn't try to steal the rock and use it for her own nefarious purposes."

"Why would she do that?" asked Karyn. "She's our friend."

"I guess," said Jon, a little reluctantly.

"Come on, don't worry," said Karyn, reassuring Jon by clasping his right hand in both her hands. "Forget about her for a minute. You were about to ask me out, weren't you?"

Jon looked up, startled, straight into Karyn's beautiful green eyes, enhanced by the eyeliner, mascara, and colorful eyeshadow that she now wore.

Karyn smiled, a bit nervously. "Come on, it was more than a little obvious." She clutched Jon's hand even tighter, making contact with the stone between his fingers. "I just wish..."
