Suddenly, Jon knew exactly what was different. There were a lot of subtle differences between this reality and the previous one. But one of the most glaring differences was his choice in friends.

In this new reality, he hung out more with the popular crowd than anyone else (he wasn't popular himself, but he was athletic, which made most of his friends jocks). And at the same time, he was no longer friends with Karyn, Tim, or Pete. Instead, Sarah was. That's why Sarah didn't really know him and was a little confused as to why he was asking about Karyn.
