Several teachers were going out of town for a week-long conference. He'd approved it, and the money had been spent. But since then, the neighboring district had a flu epidemic, and all the usual substitutes and even his emergency calls were tied up there with none to spare. Their situation was much more dire than his. And he couldn't leave their classes unsupervised. He had four teachers going, each teaching five different classes full of students a week, plus supervising extracurricular activities and their turns at lunchroom and hallway supervision. They could muddle along without them in some other capacities, but... Then, suddenly, he had an idea. He picked up the phone and called his secretary, Debbie Stern. "Debbie, can you find out..."
