As it was there was a very good selection in which she was chosen and since the main action of the story happen during the following chapters anyway I see no harm in putting them at the field and continuing the story. The first chapter to which you refer only introduces the idea that there will be tryouts, something that all the later stories and the very title tell us anyway, so i see no problem in ignoring it. I've been trying to tell a story, and i feel like you are trying to correct my story based on a technically, that has nothing to do with the story I'm telling. Bottom line is unless they being at the mall is of some major plot importance to a story you were planning on telling but have yet to get to, in which case of course i say go for it, i enjoy your writing often, leave it alone and let the story be.
