Aramaes Species: Untransformed Human Creator: Charles Matthias Aramaes was the ship's mage on the Arrow.

Barney Species: River Otter Creator: Christian O'Kane Barney was simple-minded since birth. The one thing that he knows anything about is fish, and after the curses became the fishkeeper for Lord Altera Loriod. Barney was the only one who noticed that the goldfish where Loriod kept a pyrock hidden were sick and thus, gave an important clue to Prince Phil that eventually led to Loriod's fall. He has since moved to Whales where he tends to the fish on the Naval Academy Grounds.

Clover Species: Rabbit Creator: Christian O'Kane Clover is married to Prince Phil. She was of minor nobility in the Metamor Valley before marrying. She has since left for Whales with her husband.

Heraclitus Species: Dragon Creator: Charles Matthias Heraclitus was hatched on the great mountain that occupies the eastern face of Whales. He enjoys serving Whales as a courier Dragon, as it gives him an opportunity to see more of the world. Has occasionally ferried people back and forth as well, most notably Charles Matthias, rescuing the rat from Baron Calephas's army in the forests of Arabarb.

Horatio Species: Male Human Creator: Christian O'Kane Horatio began life as the daughter of the captain of Lord Alvarez Loriod's guard. When the curse struck her, she became a boy, and soon after went to Whales to study. He applied to join te Royal Navy of Whales, something that should have been impossible, but Phil was impressed by his determination and so saw to it that he was accepted.

Josephina Species: Female Human Creator: Christian O'Kane Josephina was once captain of Lord Alvarez Loriod's guard. When the curses made her female, Lord Altera Loriod commanded that all who had switched genders to conform to their new identity. She was given in marriage to Barney, and expected to keep the river otter's house. She came to love Barney as he came to love her, but she felt hopeless and that her life could never go anywhere again. Phil discovered her plight, and arranged for her and Barney to move to Whales. While Josephina's freedom there is greater, she has come to accept her role as mother and wife more fully now that hope has been given back to her.

Lycias Species: Untransformed Human Creator: Raven Blackmane Lycias is the head of the Lothanasi order on Whales. He is also one of the very few considered by Raven hin'Elric to be free of the corruption that has overtaken many in the upper echelons of the Lothanasi clergy.

Magnus Species: Untransformed Human Creator: Charles Matthias Magnus was the coxswain aboard the Arrow. He spent his time dutifully trying to rid the Arrow of its rat problem and worrying over his captain.

Phil Species: Rabbit Creator: Christian O'Kane Prince Phillip was born a commoner, but distinguished himself in the Whalish Navy. After King Tenomides became a widower, he was adopted as the Crown Prince of Whales. While assisting in the defence of Metamor during the Battle of Three Gates, his Cannon backfired and he was covered in Whalish Fire. He would have died a grisly death if the curses had not been cast at just that moment. He was healed and became a white rabbit. He has to sleep in a cage though, because he has a greater tendency towards going feral than do most Keepers. Phil stayed at Metamor and served as Duke Thomas's Chief of Intelligence. After news of Tenomides's failing health, Phil left Metamor to return to his homeland to assist his father in managing the kingdom.

Ptomamus Species: Untransformed Human Creator: Charles Matthias Commander Ptomamus was Captain of the Arrow. He was ordered to sail to Arabarb under a flag of truce to secretly plant Charles Matthias in the city. Ptomamus, who is allergic to rats, did his duty loyally, though his ship was sunk while trying to escape from Arabarb's forces. He and his crew fled to the western shores of Arabarb where they were found and rescued by another Whalish ship.

Pythoreas Species: Untransformed Human Creator: Charles Matthias Commodore Pythoreas is an old commander in the Whalish Navy. He usually coordinates missions from Whales, and only rarely ventures out onto the sea now.

Rupert Species: Great Ape Creator: Christian O'Kane Rupert was once a member of the Whalish Marines, but he was assigned to Prince Phil after Phil became a rabbit. Rupert has lost the ability to speak, but he has developed a version of sign language to compensate. He is one of Phil's closest confidants and serves him with both loyalty and admiration.

Tenomides Species: Untransformed Human Creator: Christian O'Kane King Tenomides of Whales is an old widower who has no heirs. He adopted Phil so that his line would not come to an end as he was too old he felt to remarry. He has kept Whales's Navy strong during his reign, and has forged alliances with several lands, including Metamor. In recent months, he has fallen gravely ill, and now leaves the day to day running of the kingdom to Phil.

Titus Species: Untransformed Human Creator: Charles Matthias Titus is a young man in service to Whales. One of his tasks is to drive the carriages for high ranking military officers.
